Happy Birthday Blackbird Leys!
To mark its 50th birthday the residents of Blackbird Leys estate
are holding 50 community events throughout 2007 - including street
games and a football tournament for youngsters, and art
and photographic exhibitions in which all residents can participate.
There will even be an evening to celebrate the 1950s.
The estate has decided to make 2007 the 50th anniversary of the
decision by Oxford City Council, in May 1957, to build what was then
a new estate to the south of the city, to help solve a housing crisis.
Paul Isaacs, events co-ordinator, said: "Blackbird Leys is a great community.
It is going to be a lot of fun having 50 special activities for everybody
to participate in. The idea is for everybody to have their chance.
That means arranging something fun to do or turning up and getting
stuck in."

Spindleberry Nature reserve and brook Clean-up day

The Spindleberry Nature Reserve got a welcome clean-up as part of the 50 year events. The event was organised by Malcolm Taylor, the senior streetwarden in Blackbird Leys.
The team of willing workers met up at 10 and split into groups. Armed with litter pickers they dispersed to pick up litter from around Spindleberry pond and brook and in the woods. A couple of the more intrepid street wardens put on Wellington boots and waders and dragged bikes out of the pond.
The team consisted of the 4 streetwardens from Blackbird Leys, one of the streetwardens from Wood Farm, Oxford City Council Park Rangers and Countryside Rangers. Two local families also came to help with their children.
Several bicycles and plenty of rubbish was fished out from the pond brook.
